On August 9,Typhoon Dolphin came to the east coast of China in the Yuhuan region of Zhejiang Province as the strongest storm of the current season (Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale).
The typhoon hit Shanghai and nearby cities. It severely damaged transport networks and caused full suspension of operations at major sea and air terminals.
Transport delays forced by the typhoon at key sea ports:
• Vessel waiting times reached 7-8 days at Waigaoqiao Port, and 3-5 days at Ningbo;
• Over 30 vessels queued up at the Yangshan Terminal, with berthing delays up to 10-12 days;
• According to Linerlytica over 2.4 million TEUs were blocked in North Asia;
• There were 49 cancellations on East-West routes between weeks 34 and 35 which represents approximately 7% of their capacities;
• According to Sea Intelligence, approximately 1.7 million TEUs were effectively sidelined which is equivalent to approximately 5% of global container capacity.
Ports are now resuming operations, but clearing out the congestion is slow. It may take several more weeks for the situation to fully return to normal.
Logistics is still experiencing the consequences of the disruption:
• There are ongoing adjustments to ETD (Estimated Time of Departure) and ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival);
• Rollovers are common: containers cannot be loaded onto the originally scheduled vessel and are transferred to the next sailing;
• Cancellations of individual vessel calls and changes to departure ports are possible;
• Delays at overloaded terminals are extending cargo delivery times and increasing shipping rates. For example, spot rates on the Shanghai-Moscow route had risen 77% year-on-year by mid-August.
